Experienced Journalist and Independent Whiskey Critic

A veteran spirits journalist and independent critic, I am one of the foremost authorities on whiskey in the United States. I have written hundreds of articles about whiskey and spirits and interviewed the top names in the industry, giving me unparalleled access and expertise. I’m currently the spirits columnist at The Food Section. I also write for a variety of other publications on a freelance basis. Previously, I served as the whiskey editor for The New Wine Review and, prior to that, Senior Editor at Whisky Advocate, where I managed digital editorial operations. I also designed, developed, and oversaw Whisky Advocate’s blind tasting department and served as a reviewer of bourbon, scotch, and other whiskies. In addition, I served as Editor-at-Large of wine and spirits trade publication Market Watch.

I combine the chops of an experienced reporter and editor with a love of storytelling and sharing my knowledge and passion with others. I have broad experience in video production and livestreaming: Put me in front of a camera and things get interesting! I’m also a seasoned moderator of industry panels and expert guest on podcasts and video streams, as well as for live events. My contributions to spirits journalism have been recognized with awards nominations, including the 2019 and 2020 National Magazine Awards. I received the Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer Award in 2020. I am a Certified Spirits Specialist, and a graduate of the University of North Carolina and the University of Edinburgh.

Writing

I enjoy tackling big subjects—like the battle for tequila’s soul, or whether we’ve reached peak bourbon—and I don’t shy away from controversy, like questioning the value of “luxury” whiskey. But I’m equally at home talking with Emmy-winning actors and people named Van Winkle. (Speaking of which—I also believe that Pappy isn’t the only game in town for top-quality collectible bourbon.)
